The Aquarium of Cala Gonone was inaugurated on July 10th, 2010. It has got 25 water display tanks and will allow you to explore the sea bottom of the Mediterranean Sea and of the tropical seas as well

The Aquarium of Cala Gonone was projected by the architects Peter Chermayeff e Sebastiano Gaias, who have already designed some of the most beautiful aquaria of the whole world - like Baltimore, Osaka, Genoa and Lisbon - and the Maritime Museums of Alexandria in Egypt, Keelung in Thailand and Oberhausen. The Aquarium of Cala Gonone was inaugurated at the beginning of July in 2010. It is situated amidst an area of naturalistic and archaeological interest, the oasis of the park of “La Favorita” in the centre of Cala Gonone.

Its surface area measures one thousand five hundred square meters and it fits in perfectly into the surrounding nature. From on high it dominates the Gulf of Orosei, nestled in a thick vegetation, in which trees and mediterranean undershrubs alternate. The aquarium has got two wings. The southern wing is characterized by wide glass walls that let the sunlight into the hall. The other wing, acing north, accomodates the tanks on two floors. On the ground floor there is an exhibition of 25 display tanks. The first floor accomodates another 15 tanks that aren’t open to the public, but are used for quarantine and settling in periods.

The “Life Support System” or LSS, which filters and treats the sea water that has been gathered from a subjacent pumping station, is also situated on the upper floor. The “half-open” system of the Aquarium of Cala Gonone needs to be refilled only a few times during the week as it has got several weeks of autonomy thanks to a capacious impoundment and filter tank.

The population of aquarium fishes and sea dwellers is steadily increasing. The exhibition area has got two main sectors: that of the Mediterranean Sea and that of tropical coral reefs.
